Collaboration
As mentioned in the
section about the process core does a full engineering
process embrace a broad spectrum of different dimensions which all
are acting together simultaneously. Besides the process core as such we
will distinguish at least the following dimensions:
- The users as the group of people which will work with the
results of the engineering process
- The engineering team which is responsible for the
engineering process
- The communication of the users as well as certain kinds of
collaboration
- The communication of the engineering team as well as
certain kinds of collaboration
- The communication between the users and the
engineering team as well as certain kinds of collaboration
- The languages, operating systems and hardware as the
'medium' of realization of the abstract ideas of the engineering
team
- The tools used by an engineering team
- The theories which inform the heads of the engineering team
what to do
- The Theories/ Models/ Opinions which inform the
heads of the users what to do
- The environment of the engineering team imposing some
restrictions (Laws, standards, conventions, rules, ....) on the
engineering process
- The environment of the users imposing some
restrictions (Laws, standards, conventions, rules, ....) on the usage
of the engineered system
- .....
The most important
dimension(s) seem to be the communication and collaboration
dimension(s). The reason for this is that in teams with more than one
member the coordination of the different brains can only be managed by
communication and collaboration. As the complexity of the engineering
task is increasing, as well as the number of team members, the more
demanding will the communication and collaboration between
the team members as well as with the users be. Because the
capability of a human person to handle complexity per time unit is
limited, one has to take into account the 'optimal' size of teams in
connection with the capacity of communication and collaboration
capacities.
